Briefs for the week of January 26, 1998
Total Solar Eclipse draws world's attention to Aruba
As February 26,1998 approaches, the Aruba Tourism Authority experiences more and more
commotion around the Total Solar Eclipse. Since the eclipse's path lies directly above
Aruba, the whole island will become pitch dark in the middle of the day.
This awe inspiring event is drawing the world's attention to Aruba. Astronomers,
international media and eclipse chasers are flocking to Aruba to experience the last total
solar eclipse of the century (in the Western hemisphere)
In Aruba, ATA calculates that there will be about fourteen thousand visitors on the
island. Arrangements are made for groups that have contacted ATA
on the undisturbed area on the eastern tip on the island (past the pet cemetery).
International and local press members are invited to watch at Nanki Country Club.
Both groups will have ample and adequate space
available to work. Eateries and restroom facilities will be available.
School children and the population in general will be provided with information through
the Department of Education. Television and radio shows about the eclipse will be aired
along with information on where to buy the eclipse
shields.
Full color brochures are available at the airport, cruiseship terminal, hotels and even a
Web page have been created by the Aruba Tourism Authority in order to inform all our
visitors who will be in Aruba during the event.
According to Mrs. Myrna Janson, Public Relations Director for the Aruba Tourism Authority,
"We are expecting coverage from some TV networks, photographers and journalists from
different parts of the world. We receive new
information every day and the interest seems to grow as the eclipse date nears. The event
will definitely be a new experience for all of us".
