Briefs for March 1-31, 1999
Havana Beach Club opens its wonderful grill restaurant with flying colors The colors of the walls of the new Havana Beach Club, Aruba's hottest hot-spot in town, are amazing. Its new grill restaurant, with its relaxed atmosphere, has also something to do with colors: it passed the test of the invited guests with flying colors last Friday evening by serving up a most delicious dinner. Succulent churrasco steak with six sauces to choose from preceded by a most unusual apple curry soup and concluded with fresh fruit in a mango sauce was served with an eye for detail, color and taste. It all looked and was fantastic. Last Friday evening the Aruban press as well as the Aruba Tourism Authority personnel had been invited to be the first official guests of the Havana Beach Club Grill. Owner Anthony Muyale, A. Croes and Manager Jaime Dijkhoff warmly welcomed their guests in the tropical Havana Beach Club. The club, located right across from the Caribbean Palm Resort near Cas di Cultura, is Arubas answer to the trend of smoking cigars in a tropical, Caribbean, rustic atmosphere. Diana Muyale, Anthony's wife, has flawlessly concocted a very attractive mix of old and new, antiques and art nouveau inside the building. The colors ochre, brick red, and brown prevail, making the Havana Beach Club a warmly welcoming place for a night out. The Grill specializes in US Prime steaks as well as meat from Argentina. But there is more on the menu: escargots, grilled conch, chicken wings, smoked salmon and carpaccio are among the appetizers, while Mully Catawny apple curry soup, Italian pomodori, French onion and Fisherman soup cater to the soup lover's fancy. Then there are the salads: romana, boccaccio, jamon, serrano and caesar salad can precede the Porter House steak, fillet mignon, churrasco, BBQ ribs, sirloin steak, veal chop or mixed grill. Or one can choose shrimps, Maine lobster, and catch of the day, swordfish or chicken. Dessert choices are Dutch apple pie, berry fruit platter or Choco Loco, a fanciful, sinfully good option. Chefs are Venezuelan born Darwin Torres and Dutch Wilco: they know what's good... During the day, the Havana Beach Club Pool Bar is open for everyone who wishes to enjoy the sunshine, a dip in the pool or in the ocean, sip a cocktail and savor lunch. Suggestions were voiced to name the pool bar the Bati Bleki Pool Bar in honor of Rona Coster who succeeds in making everything she does into a terrific, happy occasion, full of banter and gossip. The pool bar opens at 10:30 a.m. and serves lunch until 6 p.m. The grill opens at 5:30 p.m.; its last seating is at 10:30 p.m. after which the night can be danced away till dawn. The owners of the Havana Beach Club and the Caribbean Town Resort have many wonderful ideas how to make this spot at the entrance of Oranjestad into a water sports and fun facility. A spa and beauty salon, a new playground for children and even a five-star hotel are among the many plans which the Driessen brothers and Anthony Muyale are entertaining. If their projects are all as good as their new grill restaurant, they will each be absolute toppers. For more information on Havana Beach Club drop them a line at havana@visitaruba.com
Official opening of The Spa at the Mill The official opening of the already very successful 'The Spa at The Mill' spa and beauty salon was very special: a beautifully body-painted waif wafted through the throng of well-wishers: she was painted in the color blue, signifying the importance of water. That's the image, which the word spa evokes, of course. The massage rooms of 'The Spa at The Mill' are lovely, with nice decorative touches, the Jacuzzi in the tropical garden is romantic and Marcella and Viviana, the sisters who make it all happen, are lovely and sweet. 'The Spa at The Mill' offers scrubs, wraps, aroma therapy, reflexology, Shiatsu, professional make-up and waxing as well as facials and massages. Its specialty is the use of aloe, which is freshly cut. Aloe is the miracle plant, which grows profusely on the island. It is used to heal bums, prevent scarring, after sunburn and as an anti-inflammatory. A fresh aloe wrap is nothing to be sneezed at, as it leaves your skin as soft as a baby's. The Spa at The Mill's logo is a flowering aloe plant. In the short months that The Spa at The Mill is open, sisters Marcella and Viviana and Martijn Middeldorp have made many converts. One only has to go once to the pretty, intimate beauty salon to be convinced that this is the place to go to. They offer special honeymoon packages, three-hour cellulite treatments and much, much more. For the official opening, a host of friends and well-wishers came to congratulate Marcella and Michael van den Berg, Viviana Ramirez, Martijn Middeldorp and Frits Israel with their spa and to toast their continued success. Many glasses were raised.

Saying goodbye for now, as he will surely be back in the future, many friends and colleagues came to wish him all the best during a cocktail party in his honour. Mr. Nooren received a backpack filled with necessities for his upcoming adventure, as he is traveling to India to climb the Himalayas. He received his gift out of the hands of Mr. Alex Nieuwmeijer, who has been appointed general manager of Divi Phoenix, Divi Village, Dutch Village, Divi Resort and Tamariin. "After my two-month trip, who knows what I'm going to do," was Mr. Nooren's answer to the question what his plans for the future look like. Mark Nooren spent thirteen years on Aruba; three of which working for Divi. Former Maitre d' of Chez Mathilde Restaurant and driving force at Aruba Restaurants, Herdy ten Lohuis is going to be his successor. Mark Nooren's Himalayan trip will take him to a height of 6,000 feet; the highest one can go without oxygen. He will be part of an expedition. We hope that he will have a fantastic trip and that his newly acquired compass will direct him to Aruba soon.
