Briefs for April 1-30, 2000
Aruba to U.S.A. - Now a domestic flight! As of this passed Monday, 17th April 2000, all flights with destination to the U.S.A. are being considered domestic flights when making use of the U.S. pre-clearance facilities in Aruba. This is due to the inauguration of the permanent INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) and U.S. customs departments at the Queen Beatrix 2000 airport. Aruba is one among very few non-U.S. destinations (Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Canada) to offer this service to American passengers. This will facilitate the travel experience for the passenger, since he will now be able to land in the U.S., pick-up his suitcase and go home, eliminating the need to go through immigration and customs.
On 30th April - the Queens Birthday - the first annual International Fierljeppen competition will be held in Aruba. At Eetcafé The Paddock, more then 40 participants, consisting of Arubans, tourists, and Dutchmen will be competing for various trophies. Although this is a very popular sport in the Netherlands (especially in "Friesland") it took some getting used to in Aruba to pronounce "fierljeppen." The rules of the game have been adapted to the location: Unlike the Netherlands, canals do not exist in Aruba, so jumps will be made in the sea, where divers will try to accurately measure the distances covered by each participant. All participants will be notified through Friesland's Fierljeppen organization's publications on the techniques used and allowed. The first jumps will start at exactly 12:00 PM with the
last jump at 6:00 PM. One and all is invited to witness this very typical Dutch sport at Eetcafé The Paddock
For the sixth consecutive year, the Special Events Department of the Aruba Tourism Authority together with the Bartenders Association of Aruba are once again organizing the Bartenders Contest. This event has become particularly popular, attracting a large crowd. The event will take place on April 28th, 2000 at the Alhambra Festival Plaza. The competition will start at exactly 8:00 PM and will conclude at 12:00 AM. The participating bartenders, will be representatives of hotels, restaurants and bars in Aruba. The winning drink will be titled the "Millennium Drink of Aruba," which will serve to represent Aruba during the International ALAB competition in Santo Domingo. The public will have the opportunity to taste each participating drink against a very reduced price. Climax (popular local band) will also be performing until 1:00 AM, to celebrate the sixth anniversary of this competition. For more information about the Bartenders Contest 2000, you
