Pole Sitting
Staffmembers of orphanage Imeldahof, four
polesitters, VIP polesitter Jimmy Douglas, Garage Cordia's Hans
Schnog, First National Bank's Edwin Tromp and Cafe The Plaza's Frans de Rooij came
together last Wednesday afternoon for the official and financial part of the Polesitting Championship 2000.
The successful event was held in the beginning of last April at Cafe The Plaza in the Seaport Market Place. The goal of
this year's championship was to reach the amount needed to pay off the Toyota bus, which
had been donated to the orphanage earlier. "We even surpassed that amount,'' said a
very pleased Frans de Rooij as he handed over the envelope filled with money to
Imeldahof's Dynia Muller.
Proceeds of the annual
polesitting championship go towards a charity, while the sitters get to keep part of their
sponsormoney for their efforts. In 1999 a brandnew bus was donated to Imeldahof; this bus
would be paid off in two `instalments'. "The children love their airconditioned
bus,'' told Dynia. "It is used a lot: chauffeur Dominico takes the kids to school in
it, takes them to their weekend fosterhomes and to various activities during the week.''
This year's Polesitting championship resulted in the smashing of the record, which stood
at 80 hours (Robert Koppejan). Tim de Vries broke the record with an
incredible, unprecedented 81 hours without sleep. Second place was for Frits
Hibbert (73), third for Yolande Philips (67), fourth place for Claerisse
Braam (56) and fifth for Chantal Jonk (41). VIP sitters included
Jimmy Douglas of Jimmy's Place (11 hours), Imeldahof's Bert Wielenga (8), Edwin Lucas (3)
and Mirtha Leon (2 times 6 hours). Sitters were monitored by doctors Van der Linden and
Samuels and by masseur Jossy Tromp, who said to have slept `almost as little as the
polesitters during the championship'.
Cafe The Plaza's Frans de Rooij thanked main sponsors
Hans Schnog and Edwin Tromp, the polesitters, Imeldahof staffers and everyone who donated
time, effort and money to the wonderful sport of polesitting.

Mr. World Aruba 2000
Designer Ronchi de Cuba recruited twelve
rough diamonds, kids out of
nowhere to participate in his first ever Mr. World 2000.
The youngest and
the tallest, pretty-boy Jeffrey Werleman, 16, walked away with the
ultimate title at the end of a very entertaining soiree at the Tropicana Showroom. DJ
Liesje Tromp reports he already enjoyed 30-seconds of fame as 50% of the reigning Carnival
Prince and Pancho. Only he had long hair then, which he cut short for the pageant. Jiro
Erasmus also opines Jeffrey had a confident stage personality, in a still under-developed
physique. He shows the most promise, concludes Ed Malone. Blessed with straight teeth,
blue eyes, no stick-out ears, nice chin, he snatched the title from Enriquillo
Kelkboom who according to my son David, a fitness buff, worked hard on his body,
but BOMBED miserably in the question and answer part of the evening. Former Miss Aruba,
Wendy Lacle, the fitness advisor on my left-hand side - she starts at the Divi Phoenix
Gym, tomorrow - suspected some of the abs on the contestants were painted. God bless make
up! Silver clad, reedy model Deborah starring in a role Sigourney Wever would have loved
to have, was very good. Scarily robotic. I also loved supreme Jermaine,
and Gregory who seemed from his answers to be the quickest. Wrinkled
clothes, bad video footage, a fashion show of ugly clothes on lovely female Knockout models,
none could dampen our enthusiasm as it was a great show. Surprise, I stayed till the end.
Celebrity judges included Bernadette Manning, Alexandra Ochoa,
Tessa Pietersz & Miriam Dabian, now blonde and shorn

Watapana Food & Art Festival
makes a start for 2000
On Wednesday, May 3rd 2000, the Special Events Department of the Aruba Tourism Authority
will initiate the Watapana Food & Art Festival as part of the "One Cool Summer" program which
will run for about 26 weeks.
This will be the sixth consecutive year in which this event
takes place. The opening hours are every Wednesday from 6:00 -
8:30 PM, on the area right between the Allegro and the Hyatt.
This festival has always been a success with both the local population as well as visitors
to the island. For visitors, this will be an excellent opportunity to try different dishes
- which will be made available by some of Aruba's better restaurants - and of course to
admire or even purchase some local artwork.
Musical entertainment will be in the hands of two local
bands with Ms. Coleta Zschuschen as MC. Some participating restaurants: Boonoonoonoos, Papiamento, La Dolce
Vita, Cuba's
Cooking, Pirates Nest & Joey's Restaurant, all offering special and
delicious dishes. The Aruba Bartenders Association will also be present and in charge of
the bar, offering different kinds of cocktails, beer, wine as well as soft drinks.
Every first and last festival of every month will be
dedicated to Aruba, with the presentation of local folklore & typical groups. On May
3, 2000, the festival will present local talent such as Tipico los Amigos, Flash Dance
Group, and Frahoma Band.

120-seat restaurant, a casual all-day cafe overlooking the greens, a children's
playground, a game room, a large Pro Shop with the latest in resort fashions and
