The 8th annual Bartenders Contest

The 8th annual Bartenders Contest is coming to Plaza Betico Croes on Friday, April 27th, announced Chido Henriquez on behalf of ABA, the Aruba Bartender Association at a press conference, in the presence of last year's winner Chris Semeleer and Fernando Kock, ABA's President. The press conference was held at the Radisson Aruba Resort & Casino. The bartenders' contest was originally created in cooperation with the Aruba Tourism Authority, informs Henriquez, who is currently the association's treasurer. It launched eight years ago when One Cool Summer, the island's off-season promotional campaign was conceived. Pete Christiaans, a veteran master-mixer from the Holiday Inn walked confidently away with the crown. Since then many memorable fancy drinks have been mixed such as Lady in Red, and last year's Locolime, a delicious concoction made with
Malibu rum, Frangelica, sour mix, Pineapple juice, sprinkled with cinnamon. Some bartenders such as Gabby Morales of the Radisson and Mirlo Dioscoro of the Wyndham have made a name for themselves performing brilliantly in the limelight, under pressure, watched by juries and local crowds.

Aruba enjoys a high professional level of bartenders, said Fernando Kock. And he should know as he traveled with Aruban
representatives to Cuba, Santo Domingo, Brazil, Curacao & Puerto Rico to various regional competitions, under the auspices of ALAB, Amigos Latino Americano de Bartender.
The event on the plaza will feature up to 15 contestants. They are required to submit their drink recipe ahead of time and stipulate
ingredients and garnish. They will each be given 7 minutes to complete mixing their cocktail and presenting it to a professional
jury. Competitors will be rated on technique and efficiency. At the end of the evening a winner and two runner ups will be announced.

ABA is looking into creating a bar book containing all historical recipes, says Henriquez as a promotional vehicle for the island
and an educational tool. Incidentally, Aruba proudly counts about 150 bartenders among local hotel employees. Plaza Betico Croes will feature a number of bars that evening, cocktails will be sold for just one dollar and the general public is invited to taste and applaud.

Back by popular demand

After coaxing, pleading and finally paying the Cuban government, the management of Cuba's Cooking' got "Technico" Sergio Morales to return to Cuba's Cooking' with his new Trio. Heading up the Trio will be Bertha Portuondo, whose cabaret style personality, voice and small percussion will absolutely endear you to all the nostalgia associated with Cuban Music. Finally the 55 year old guitarist and bongo player, Pablo Santamaria whose name is still famous in Havana. What makes Pablo so special is that he played and sang with the boys in the "Buena Vista Social Club", whose recordings have been made famous the world over.
The Magic Trio has been playing at Cuba's Cooking' since April 15th and will be playing every night.

Rotarians raise funds

Sunday April's fools day was no joke, it was serious fun, as in fundraising. The Rotary Club members were out in their distinctively colorful tee-shirts cooking meals, selling flea market items, raffling houses, pouring drinks, all for charitable causes. Among participating restaurants dedicating all proceed to help the community: Texas de Brazil, Chez Mathilde and Tony Roma's. Limbo Neck Syndrome at Casa Del Mar

At Casa del Mar every Monday, a tropical fun atmosphere prevails. Monday's night's BBQ at La Gondola Restaurant features a delicious meal in addition to top notch Caribbean entertainment. The food is carefully prepared by chef Carlo Persia the executive in charge of the kitchens at some of Aruba's best restaurants, namely the Waterfront Crablouse, La Gondola & Turtle's Nest, all members of the local Gastronomic Association. On the menu a complete salad bar, followed by grilled chicken legs, steak, pork loin ribs - smothered with a tangy sauce, a classic chili con carne, corn on the cob, cole slaw and sweet fried plantain. While diners lick their fingers on the terrace overlooking the ocean Frahoma, one of Aruba's best bands, featuring singer Bradley, strikes up the music. Band leader Francis and his musicians, including his talented teenage daughter, go through a complete repertory of Carnival music. Then the limbo dancer- fire eater arrives on the scene. Imbert Morisson hails from Trinidad. His specialty? Slithering under a burning limbo stick hanging low over two empty beer bottles. The show is made up of guests in the process of acquiring the Limbo Neck Syndrome. They follow Imbert's happy lead to music finding out how low they could go. Body and Mind Experience

Nick Praksma teaches more than Tae-Bo-Karobics at the Marriott Ocean Club. It's the Body & Mind experience, he explains as he mixes assorted kicks, chops and uppper cuts with jumping jacks. Nick's classes follow a nice and comfortable format in which he allows students to warm up, speed up their metabolism to burn fat, then slow down to stretch as an injury prevention. The classes are conducted in the shade, on the gorgeous deck overlooking the blue waters. Students consist of tourists and locals and Nick peppers sessions with his martial art philosophy. His subjects range from achievement to ambition, to breathing, all in relationship to weight loss, physical condition and mental strength. The work outs are excellent, the pep talks even better!  Join Nick Monday, Wednesday & Friday for an hour of hard work and fun. Classes are conducted courtesy of Rhodana Security as Nick is one of their top people as well as a popular boxer, fighter on the island.

ON ART & WOMEN

At Cas di Cultura Thurday night March 28 a small forum gathered to discuss and comment on the recent My Right, Mind, Body & Soul exposition curated by Elvis Lopez. The exhibition displays works by 23 female artists living in Aruba. It was opened on March 8th, International Woman’s Day to honor achievements made by women and to focus on areas that still require attention. The catalogue openly states the exhibition’s goal: to achieve a more emancipated society in which men and women share equal
privileges and responsibilities. The words, formulated by Jocelynee Beerda Croes, on behalf of the organizing committee convey the feeling that there is still much to be done for women’s causes/issues on the island. Not surprisingly, proceeds from the
catalogue sales were earmarked to the Foundation of Women in Difficulty.

Moderator, artist Stan Kuperi made some excellent observations at the beginning of his presentation. He chronicled female
participation in Caribbean art exhibitions and stated the first work by a Caribbean woman was on display in Puerto Rico in ‘93. It was the debut. That breakthrough was followed up in Mira Arte, here in Aruba, which had just one sculpture by a female artist, Mariza Erasmus, included. She was the only female participant among scores of accomplished male artists. Mariza’s unforgettable work eternalized a large black woman tightly clad in a colorful bathing suit and swim cap carefully balanced on a whimsical surfboard. A similar breakthrough occurred that year in Cuba where an entire expo- titled Sky & Land, was dedicatedto feminine art.

Females thereafter were unstoppable, remarked Kuiperi as in ‘95 and ‘96 there were excellent successful expositions here with many female artists in attendance, the barriers have fallen, women were participating in full force. And Kuiperi sees a great connection between the developments in Caribbean visual art and the role women play in it.

As for the content of the expo, Kuiperi expressed obvious surprise. There is hardly a mention of One Happy Island in the works. With over 2000 school kids visiting the exhibition hall, they all had strong emotional reactions to the work of Amy Silva - trapped Barbie dolls, in a cage like universe; Rhona Lemminga - steel threaded, beaded ball gown / contraption; Jana Schagen - little people in a bird cage, hung with a bridal veil or Osaira Muyale’s outright I never promised you a rose garden.

The forum agreed Aruba is fortunate. No violence against women was documented in the exposition. Yet disillusionment was
apparent. Educated women in Aruba are asking themselves: Is that all there is? They lovingly shoulder the burdens of families, children & careers yet are questioning whether their destiny is served well by all of that materialistic reality allowing them just little time/room for personal development, for the fulfillment of their own dreams.

Deserving special mention and a word of gratitude Jocelynee’s mom, Marie-Terese Croes who through her contacts in the
community got the buses sponsored thus allowing school kids some exposure to art. Kuiperi sees another connection here
between the increase of crime in the community and the decrease of subsidy and support for the arts.

Bike Tour for Charity

La Cabana All Suite Beach Resort and Aruba's Cyclers' Bond announced a joint community project last week in conjunction with the Queen Wilhelmina Cancer Foundations. The project was announced at a Press Conference at the resort expertly organized by Glenda Croes of the PBX department. Present, Ivy Swaan the President of the cancer foundation together with Public Relations officer Natasha Ismael; Richard Sweatnam and Reinaldo MacKintosh represented the cyclers. Croes addressed the forum stating the resort's mission to help the community. She then introduced Richard Sweatnam. The President of the cyclers' bond told a bit of a personal story to his audience. He explained that while escorting his wife to various Dutch clinics for treatments, she is a cancer survivor, he stumbled upon the Lance Armstrong story and was inspired by the man's courage and determination. The biker who won the Tour de France, was temporarily stopped by cancer, but made a terrific comeback during the Olympics in Australia. Sweatnam wrote to the Armstrong Foundation dedicated to the fight against prostate cancer and as a result of that correspondence decided to organize the Aruba Ride for the Roses, here on his native island, modeled upon a similar one started in Austin Texas, collecting funds for breast cancer research. The Aruba Ride for the Roses will take place on April 29th starting at 7 a.m. in the morning at the gate of the Seroe Colorado colony, traveling 25 kilometers to La Cabana All Suite Beach Resort's parking lot. Additional bikers will also be invited to join at the Santa Cruz Sport's Hall, or closer to the resort at the roundabout of Tanki Leendert. Inscription is minimal for kids, Afls 8/Afls 12 for adults, including a tee shirt and a cool drink or a piece of fruit at the above two official stops. A flea market, fun bazaar with food tents, bars and game stalls for kids will be held at the parking lot, helping collect additional resources. Entertainment was pledged by the Portuguese Community Folkloric Group, the Vee-Formation and Tipico Amistoso.
Our goal says Swaan is 500 bikers, a mixed group of kids and adults. We're looking for sponsors from the community so all the money raised will remain at the disposal of the cancer foundation which has been fighting and preventing the disease on the island
for 40 years. The foundation pays for nursing, homecare, beds, wheel chairs; buys supplies and accessories, prints informational materials and in general keeps a high profile in the fight against the killer, without government subsidy. To train for the 25 kilometer course, MacKintosh will provide the community with weekly health and biking tips. Croes pledged her department full support under the slogan Mi Tambe a Aporta.

Wheel Chair Tennis Coaches being groomed

Gert Bolk & Ton Rietveld are two Dutch wheel-chair tennis coaches making the rounds in the Caribbean. They started in Curaçao where they trained 6 coaches and 5 players with great results. Now they are in Aruba, at La Cabana All Suite Beach Resort teaching 7 local tennis pros the techniques and strategies of the sport. We were asked by the Kingdom Games to offer a sport to the disabled, reports Rietveld. Tennis is as good as any other activity, he shares. It allows a wheel chair bound person the freedom to move, compete, get out of the confinement of his home, besides all the health benefits that are associated with increased physical activity. Having survived an accident or a disease, tennis represents the fact that life goes on, he adds, and that some aspects of it are truly fun. Bolk & Rietveld are members of the Nederland's Lawn Tennis Association. They are experts in their field. We first teach the disabled how to use their sport wheel chairs, then we teach them tennis, they explain. This is a double challenge. The sport wheel chairs are more stable then ordinary ones, they are also expensive, up to $3,500 a piece. But never mind, the visitors agree. We start teaching, then with improved results comes the passion for better equipment, better courts and a regular competition schedule. The local tennis pros will be practicing with kids in wheel chairs, on La Cabana's All Suite Beach Resort courts. We have 500 players in the Nederland, concludes Rietveld how many there are in Aruba we don't know, but we are confident tennis will make a difference in their lives.
