Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort proudly announces the exoneration of its owner/CEO Ewald Biemans, a distinguished entrepreneur and environmentalist, from all charges in the high-profile Avestruz case. In December 2022, the Public Prosecutor requested Biemans’ acquittal, confirming his innocence. On April 14th, a specially appointed judge from the Netherlands who presided over the case delivered a decisive ruling, reaffirming Biemans’ acquittal and vindication. This marks the end of a challenging and trying period for Biemans, who has always maintained his innocence.
A chapter closes, while new chapters begin and others continue to flourish As Biemans reflects on his experience, he stated, “Since my arrival in Aruba almost 60 years ago, I have dedicated my entire life to this island and have always held myself to the highest standards of integrity. Throughout this difficult period, I have held steadfast to my innocence. While this case has deeply affected me, I am immensely grateful to have been finally acquitted.”
Biemans has not just been a dedicated employer but also an avid supporter of sustainable tourism practices, both locally and on a global scale. Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort has been a global leader in the hotel sector and was recently named among the Top 25 Hotels in the World, Top 5 in the Caribbean, and continues to be the first and only Certified Carbon Neutral Hotel in the Caribbean. It is the first-ever hotel in the world to win the prestigious Global United Nations 2020 Climate Action Award for Climate Neutral Now, with the United Nations praising its environmental program as being an example to the hotel industry and easily replicable and scalable. These accolades have not only elevated the profile of the resort, but they have also placed Aruba on the world stage.
Biemans’ unwavering commitment to sustainable development has extended beyond the tourism industry. Serving as a proud member of various boards, he has tirelessly advocated for policy changes that promote environmentally-friendly practices. Biemans’ leadership has also included founding the Aruba Hotel and Tourism Environmental Committee and initiating the Sponsor-a-Mile program 30 years ago. He serves on the Board of Parke Nacional Arikok and has worked closely with the government to ensure the protection of Aruba’s natural resources.
Beyond Biemans’ own professional endeavors, he has been an avid philanthropist, founding organizations such as Fundashon Stimami Sterilisami, which offers low cost sterilizations of dogs and cats to humanely tackle the stray animal population in Aruba. He has also established The Bucuti Tara – GMC Park, a nature preserve in Noord that spans 120,000 m2 of property land which he donated as a gift to Aruba, together with his lifelong friend, Grete Marie Case. His goal is to conserve the natural splendor of the region, abundant with a variety of flora and fauna, for future generations to appreciate and cherish. Among other projects, Biemans is also currently spearheading his team’s efforts to establish Bucuti & Tara as the Caribbean’s premier Net Zero or Carbon Negative resort through the carbon sink that the nature preserve will facilitate.
