May’s magazine issue of Food & Wine features the Aruba Ariba cocktail on its cover and a description of the cocktail’s ingredients. The magazine additionally mentions the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino and the cocktail, giving readers a guided map of the most iconic cocktails of the Caribbean, including sister property Caribe Hilton’s Piña Colada. Hilton‘s ‘Aruba Ariba‘ is spotlighted as the island’s infamous cocktail, crediting its invention to bartender Juan “Jocky” Tromp, then 24.
During a mixology contest held at the Aruba Caribbean Hotel, Juan “Jocky” Tromp, was one of the participants. His special drink recipe stood out as the best.
The original recipe, scribbled 59 years ago on a white paper napkin, included vodka and white rum, laced with Crème de Banana, flavored with Grand Marnier, fruit punch, lemon-, pineapple-, orange juice and grenadine syrup. It is to this day, both refreshing and delicious, but drinkers beware, it carries a punch!
The magazine story includes a DIY recipe for readers to make the drink themselves, sampling a taste of One Happy Island at home.
Food & Wine is the leading upscale culinary magazine in the United States with a circulation of 935,481. Magazine contributor Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon visited the island in August 2021.
